Do you think I am the way I am because I don’t know what the stakes are? Of course not! I just don’t function without freedom and I don’t value grit. It’s useless in the long run.

Grit and subjecting oneself to harsh reality may build the funny thing you define as character but it’s useless for the problems of the mind. To fix them one needs to be free and fluid and not rigid and stoic (as in turning virtue into the conceptual or practical issue or rather an issue at all). Virtue cannot be pursued. It can only be discovered.
